Thailand needs to have crowd control law
Thailand should speed up considering a proposed crowd control bill for a more efficient control of a public gathering, Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart said on Saturday.
“Amid the social divisiveness, the country’s situation is now worrying,” Thai News Agency quoted the deputy prime minister as saying.
Regarding a rally planned by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on Dec. 10, he said “they have rights to stage the rally but they have to abide by laws.”
However, Sanan said in a bid to maintain security and peace efficiently the government needs to use a strong step referring to the proposed crowd control bill.
Once the enforcement of the crowd control legislation takes effect, the efficiency in controlling a public gathering will be improved, Sanan added.
Hence, during the parliamentary session in early 2010 involved parties should quickly consider the draft legislation regulating a public gathering, Sanan said.
The Thai cabinet in early October approved the proposed crowd control bill, which was put forward by the Royal Thai Police Office.
