Public Health offices in 8 provinces alerted to cope with tropical cyclone Nargis

Public Health Minister Chaiya Sasomsup Friday issued an urgent order to the public health offices in eight provinces to be on alert on the around-the-clock basis to provide help to people if natural disasters happen because of the influence of tropical cyclone Nargis.

The eight provinces are Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Tak, Sukhothai, Khamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani and Kanchanaburi.

The Meteorological Department announced Friday that as of 10 am Friday, Nargis was centred in the middle Bay of Bengal at latitude 15.9 degree north and longitude 93.0 degree east or about 350 kilometers west of Rangoon with maximum sustained wind of 140 kilometers per hour.

The department warned that the influence of the storm would cause heavy rains in many northern and central provinces.

  1. Warning
    No. 5 (55/2551) Time Issued : May 02, 2008

At 10.00 a.m. today, tropical Cyclone “NARGIS” in the middle Bay of Bengal was centered at latitude 15.9 degree north and longitude 93.0 degree east or about 350 kilometers west of Yangon, Myanmar with maximum sustained wind of 140 kilometers per hour. It is moving eastward with speed of 16 kilometers per hour and will move landfall to Myanmar tonight (2 May 2008). This cause abundance rainfalls and heavy to very heavy rain in many places in the North and the Central during 2-5 May, 2008.

People in the west of Thailand, especially in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Tak, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani and Kanchanaburi and Ranong provinces should beware of flooding conditions during this period. Rough sea is likely in the Andaman Sea. All ship should proceed with caution and small boat should keep off-shore during this period.

Right now, it looks like it will hold together rather well and cross parts of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai with close to 100 kph winds, and there will no doubt be torrential rains. I think it may have been a while since a cyclone like this affected northern Thailand.

  3. 12 provinces warned of flash floods

The Meteorological Department Monday warned residents of 12 provinces to brace themselves for heavy rains and possible flash floods due to an influence of a monsoon wind.

The department said the southwest monsoon over the Andaman and Gulf of Thailand would unleash heavy rains in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Tak, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Chanthaburi, Trat, Chumphon, Ranong, Phang Nga and Phuket.

  4. Cyclone Nargis killed over 350 persons in Myanmar and left a trail of devastation on the weekend but was downgraded Sunday and has weakened to a low pressure storm, but some areas in Thailand will see heavy rainfall Monday, according to the latest announcement issued from the Thai Meteorological Department.

The announcement said the cyclone had weakened to low pressure system but heavy downpours were still expected in some scattered areas throughout the country.

Flash floods remain possible on Monday and Tuesday, the announcement said.

Waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are predicted, as high as two to three metres and small boats in the Andaman Sea are advised to stay ashore until Tuesday.

According to Myanmar state television channel MRTV, at least 351 people died and nearly 100,000 people were left homeless after Cyclone Nargis battered southern Myanmar on Friday and Saturday

  5. Thailand to give US$100,000 aid to Myanmar cyclone victims

The Thai government has approved a US$100,000 grant to assist victims of Cyclone Nargis which devastated Myanmar over the weekend, and Thailand will consider further assistance as the Cabinet meets today, according to the minister of foreign affairs.

Interviewed on the morning news programme on Modernine TV (TV Channel 9), Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama said the ministry doubled its aid to $100,000 from an initial $50,000 to help cyclone-battered Myanmar.

The cabinet meeting today will discuss providing more assistance on rehabilitation work, he said.

“We are among the countries that offered help to Myanmar early. The army on Monday sent dry food and medical supplies to cyclone-hit areas by a C-130 military transport aircraft. The Myanmar foreign ministry thanked Thailand for the humanitarian aid,” Mr. Noppadon said.

Myanmar’s state media said last weekend’s cyclone killed some 10,000 persons in the town of Bogalay in the country’s Irrawaddy Delta, raising fears that the country’s overall death toll will rise significantly.

The Associated Press reported Myanmar’s foreign minister told diplomats in Yangon on Monday that, overall, more than 10,000 people may have died when Cyclone Nargis struck Saturday.

Myanmar has appealed for urgent assistance from the international community in wake of the disaster.
