Thailand: Thaksin Faces Lèse-majesté Accusation
The police have recommended to prosecutors that Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted as prime minister in a coup in September, be charged with three counts of lèse-majesté.
The potential charges of offending King Bhumibol Adulyadej stemmed from remarks by Mr. Thaksin to a group of taxi drivers, his weekly national radio address, and his supporters waving Thai flags saying, “Long live his majesty.â€
A charge of lèse-majesté carries a penalty of three to 15 years in prison in Thailand, one of the few countries that strictly prosecutes anything deemed to demean the royal family.
