Depressions to visit South until mid-December

BANGKOK: — Thailand’s Meteorological Department has forecast a series of tropical depressions hitting the southern region from now until mid-December, with heavy downpours anticipated in some parts of the region, accompanied by very high seas in the Gulf of Thailand.

The weather service said the depressions are expected to move from the Gulf to the southern region and cause heavy rains in some areas, while unusually large waves of 2 to 4 metres will occur. Heavy downpours in the region are projected to decrease after mid-December.

The cool or winter season is forecast to start in the upper North from this month due to the influence of low pressure weather systems from China, causing chilly weather in the North and Northeast.

Winter season in the central and eastern regions is expected to begin in November until January.

Cool weather with light fog is anticipated for Bangkok and its surrounding areas in early mornings between December and January. Weather will become warmer from mid-February in the capital, according to the department.

Meanwhile, Samart Chokanapitak, director general of the Royal Irrigation Department, said water volume of the Chao Phraya River passing through Nakhon Sawan at 6am (0600 hours) Saturday was measured at 3,818 cubic metres per second, down 337 cubic metres per second from Friday, while water volume running from Bang Sai district in Ayutthaya province to Bangkok was down 98 cubic metres per second to 3,373 cubic metres per second compared to Friday.

Mr. Samart said water level of the Chao Phraya River at Bangkok’s Memorial Bridge was projected to peak at 1.95 metres about noon Saturday, falling to 1.80 metres at 7.15pm Saturday night.
He said there was a need to discharge excess water from the western bank of the river and this would cause some areas in five provinces neighbouring Bangkok to become heavily flooded.
