Protests continue in Thailand in bid to end political crisis
Thousands of protesters have gathered in a Bangkok park to call for an end to Thailand’s political crisis.
Thailand’s king last week ordered the courts to resolve the crisis after snap polls in April designed to give prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra a mandate to rule, were boycotted by the opposition.
The boycott left 40 parliamentary seats empty, and undermined Mr Thaksin’s 56 per cent victory, prompting his resignation.
Another round of polling failed to fill all of the seats, casting doubt on when or if a full parliament would be able to convene.
A protest spokesman says the demonstration, late on Tuesday, was to encourage the courts to take action following the king’s advice.
The nation’s top courts are deciding whether to nullify the April polls which would clear the way for new nationwide elections.
Protests began in February after Mr Thaksin’s family sold $US1.9 billion of shares in Shin Corp, the telecoms firm he founded before entering politics, in a tax-free deal.
